Olympic House

Olympic House is more than a pavilion. It is at once the symbol and realization of the Olympic movement in Canada to have a permanent home, serving as national center for administration, documentation and information and an inspiration for all amateur sports. In Olympic House the Canadian Olympic Association presents Man at Play, an international Olympic exhibition which is the first of its kind. On two floor levels, films, slides, photographs, displays and artifacts illustrate the role of sport in self-fulfillment, its effect on the community, the training of an athlete, the Olympic Games and their history and modern features.

Olympic House exterior

Olympic House was a stark modernistic building. For some reason their was little signage to indicate what the building was. Outside was a statue of famous Finnish long-distance runner Paavo Nurmi. The Expo builders neglected to attach the 1,000 pound statue to the pedestal and it was toppled by vandals on July 11, 1967. Luckily no one was hurt in the incident and the statue was repaired. It is now on display outside the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki. (CD xx Set 308 #14)
