Hovercraft

Two model SN.R6 hovercraft, supplied by the British Hovercraft Corporation, helped carry guests to the Expo 67 site and between the islands. There was great interest in hovercraft at the time, but while they are in regular use now in many other countries they failed to become popular enough in North America to justify expanded use.

Hovercraft approaching land

The Hovercrafts were a unique way to travel from Montreal to Cité du Havre, and then on to La Ronde. One of the British-built crafts is seen here maneuvering onto the concrete pad that served as a loading/unloading facility at Cité du Havre. (CD xx Set 84 #005)

Some passengers found the trip to be exciting, while others complained it could be bumpy if the river was stirred up or if the winds were strong. Most are likely to agree on one point - they were very noisy.

Two passing Hovercrafts

There were two Hovercrafts in use; they are seen passing each other in the LeMoyne Channel. On August 3, 1967 one of the craft struck a support pillar for Cosmos Walk, injuring four of the 36 passengers on board. That was the only serious accident for the Hovercrafts, which carried 366,633 passengers during Expo. (CD xx Set 308 #012)
